New England in the Fall

Fall Savings Tips

  • As the temperatures drop, open curtains on your south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home.
  • Insulate heating ducts in unheated areas, such as attics and crawlspaces, to prevent heat loss.
  • Weatherize your home using caulk or weatherstripping. Seal air leaks around letter drops, vents, door frames and windows. Learn More
  • Check your furnace’s air filter once a month. A dirty filter slows air flow, making the system work harder, which wastes energy.
  • Set your thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit in winter. For every one degree Fahrenheit you lower your thermostat, you will use one percent less energy. See Rebate
  • Keep the damper in your fireplace closed unless a fire is burning; otherwise, your heated or cooled air can escape through the chimney.
  • Unplug chargers when electronics are fully charged, or chargers are not in use to avoid using “vampire power.” Shop Power Strips
  • Streaming a show? Digital media players use 15 times less energy than a game console. Tablets use four times less energy than a laptop.
  • In the cooler months, set ceiling fans to a clockwise rotation to push warm air down.
